Fotografia Europea 2015

TENTH EDITION

 EARTH EFFECT

In 2006, the Municipality of Reggio Emilia launched the first Fotografia Europea international festival. Photography took centre stage as a privileged tool for reflecting upon the complexity of contemporary living.

Every year, photographers have been invited to tackle different topics: the contemporary urban condition, the body, time, the viewing eye, the change, the citizenship. Many productions were created specifically for the festival and eventually became part of the city’s public collection..

This being an all-round reflection on the contemporary image, the topic of the festival is addressed not only by photographers but also by intellectuals, artists, philosophers and writers. The starting point is the teaching of Luigi Ghirri: the possibility, through the image, to look at the world as one has never done before.

For the edition 2015, which will take place in the months of May and June with three opening days 15 to 17 May, the chosen theme is Earth Effect.

On the occasion of the year of the Milan Expo, which provokes reflection upon the planet, from local areas to food, from roots to energy and a great many related topics, Fotografia Europea raises questions about the relationship of photography with these, not only with respect to its representational and documentary functions but also in terms of the ambition of originality.

One initial aspect to consider is the representation of the planet. What new geography can photography deliver to us today? Is there still a contraposition between nature and artifice? Between the memory and the new, between tradition and the future?

In the meantime, while conflicts are denounced and catastrophes are documented, efforts are also being made to find new equilibriums between the demands of nature and the necessary and inevitable human intervention and action. Art, after all, does not confine itself to representing or producing images, but has frequently felt – and still feels – that it should not just be a call to action but that it should also in turn be a specific way of acting in order to trigger a change.

Photography still has a role to play in this too, not only in terms of effectiveness but also of reflection. Furthermore, finally, how far is all this influencing photography itself, its peculiar nature and its reflection?

Fotografia Europea 2015 will attempt to make a contribution to all these topics.

OFF: over 300 exhibitions animate the city and the province

Fotografia Europea is a driving force for the development of the creativeness of the whole city and You can see that by looking at the constant growth of the Circuit OFF, an example of adhesion from the bottom up, of free participation of the citizens to a great cultural event, by building up a path parallel to the institutional exhibitions, that reserves a plurality of different and innovative looks.

With the Circuit OFF institutional forums, museums and forges of the creative ones, but also shops, hotels, restaurants, schools, circles, theaters, private houses and whole districts are turned into gallery of art: in the year when the festival will be ten years old there are 233 exhibitions in historic center and 94 exhibitions out of it between outskirts and province.

Among a lot of initiatives in the new places the exhibition The Garden of the King is signalled in the State Records Office on corso Cairoli, promoted by the association «Refoto» and curated by  Caesare di Liborio. The State Records Office also hosts the photos of Fiorella Iacono, Luca Monzani and Ettore Moni.

Ettore Moni - An empty valley   Ettore Moni

Immagini analogiche stampate a mano su carta baritata.

Fiorella Iacono - Foresta primitiva/Wistman's Wood   Fiorella Iacono

Luca Monzani    Luca Monzani - 21 Ottobre 2014
